If you’re a regular follower of this blog, you will see that this post doesn’t have a number on it. I’m going away.

The 23thorns brood is on their way down to the bush for a week or so (we’ll see how long we can survive the children in a small, unpowered bungalow). I’ve thought long and hard about ways to get posts out while I’m down there, but I can’t. The place we’re off to is an hour out of the nearest small town. There is no electricity (everything runs on gas) and no cellphone coverage.

And so I am going to abuse my executive authority as the chief (and only) blogger on here to freeze time until I get back. I’ll pick up where I left off then.

I hope you all keep well and I’ll see you when we get back. Unless I get killed by a hormonally imbalanced giraffe. “Til then, cheers.059

  11. Hurry back, dodge giraffes and any other hormonally imbalanced wildlife and bring back many stories of the Lowveld.

No no – we can’t hack it wiithout you. You skiver. (Terma of abuse I learned when I began teaching in the UK in the seventies. They also ‘wagged classes’ – another redolent metaphor).
I was walking my dogs in Oxford the other day when I saw a nice graffito on a wall: (in large block capitals and black paint)
(loved the spelling choice, and the peculiarly Oxfordian choice of insult.)

    • 23thorns says:

We don’t wag around here, but we’ve been skiving for years. It is somehow just a deeply pleasing word.
      Maybe your nincompoop was Russian?

  18. narf77 says:

Yeah…”V” looks absolute over the MOON about her impending trip into a giraffe’s digestive system…see you when you get back and you do realise that we all consider this fudging/welching (isn’t the English equivalent of “slacking off” so much more Jolly and convivial than the Aussie or African?) sir.

I decided not to leave a comment here, as you probably can’t read it without internet access.

What is the weather like in the lowveld this time of year? It’s nominally winter but east of the Drakensburgs so not like Johannesburg, and not next to the Indian Ocean like Durban.

    • 23thorns says:

It’s actually surprisingly close to the coast, over the thin part of Mozambique. It can get pretty damn cold at night (but never freezing), but the days can warm up to over thirty.

Waiting your return with bated breath.

Buh-Bye, have fun, don’t get eaten, don’t eat anything weird unless you video it, and we will try to hold down the fort for you while you are gone!

    • 23thorns says:

I always liked the idea that behind every video like that, there’s some guy who surveyed the scene of the disaster, and instead of rushing in to help, thought “this will look great on Youtube!”

  26. Try not to get eaten by a lion 🙂 I enjoy your blog too much. Actually as you wrote of hormonally imbalanced Giraffe I thought that you might cross the path of bad tempered lion…
    Have a great holiday!
