Well, here we are. The second to last weekly update. If you are new here, I am doing 100 posts in 100 days. Or roughly 100 days. I was also trying to get 60 000 views in those hundred days, but that’s not going to happen, so I’m going to take a page from the book of the politicians. I’m going to radically shift the goalposts, and then claim overwhelming success. I’m now going for 30000 views in 100 posts.

"Our, um, gas powered stadium warmer is a great success!"

“Our, um, gas powered stadium warmer is a great success!”

So how’s it going? Swimmingly. In light of my revised goals, I’m a superstar. Since I revised my goal to one I had already achieved, it’s all downhill from here. Being a politician rocks!

And the writing? Well, that’s another story. I missed a day. Friday. Women’s day. I could lie to you. I could say that I have such deep respect and admiration for women that I refuse to work on their special day. This would be a lie. Not the respect and admiration part; I respect and admire all of the things I fear. The refusal to work part.

I could lie and say that I couldn’t write a post because I had effectively injected liquid cement into the tips of my fingers, and couldn’t type without crying. This would, like all good lies, be partially true. I had effectively injected liquid cement into the tips of my fingers, and typing made me cry like a particularly whiny baby. But where I come from, you get no sympathy for the results of your own stupidity.

You should never have stood so close to a gas powered stadium warmer during testing. Dumbass.

The truth is, I was coping with being South African. We had a party on Friday. Some friends came round for lunch, and we had a ball. And then I should have settled down to write my post. Instead I settled down for a glass of wine with Mrs 23thorns. We all know what the road to hell is paved with.

We were not doing this for fun, though. When you live in a place as occasionally horrifying as South Africa, you sometimes need to take a few hours to talk the world apart and then talk it back together again, just to keep it all in perspective. Wine helps.

It's important not to go overboard. Don't have more than one bottle.

It’s important not to go overboard. Don’t have more than one bottle.

When I wasn’t skiving out of posts, I wrote about sexually complicated fish and American mayoral candidates. I wrote about Frankenstein’s hamburger and about a white Zulu from the 80’s and what he meant to us. And I wrote about a strange bird and a strange neighbour.

And now the countdown begins. Nine to go. And on that note, here’s today’s vote;

I return to the fold after 9 days of alcoholic haze induced catching up with a high school friend and find that you have been slacking off sir? Sigh… I am not even sure that my brain is able to cope with today’s early morning foray into my RSS Feed Reader that appears to have amassed a small cities worth of posts for me to clear let alone do this post justice. Here’s to all of the women who knew that last Friday was womens day. I had no idea. I was too busy drinking wine and carousing. Life is short and that bottle looks like something we drank last Friday.

🙂 Welcome back. We thought you’d been eaten by Earl.
I only lost one day. You lost nine. Your age is beginning to catch up on you.

I lost a few days there. I learned a valuable lesson. I lie…I learned nothing at all. Earl has suffered over the last 9 days and is now back as rightful king and heir to the attention throne. I just reached the post about hyena’s and have to wait till tomorrow to read it as I have to head into town to buy food to supplement all of that wine that we imbibed. A body needs more than wine to function…apparently I did learn something (oh…and heads don’t like too much wine…I learned 2 things).

  2. Hey, looks like you’ve been freshly pressed (congrats, big time!) and you haven’t been blogging that long. I’ve been at this for 2 1/2 years and have not quite 80,000 views. You’re doing pretty well from my vantage point!

  3. Hahaha 🙂

At least you wrote one on Saturday, possibly with a hangover.

I like that you set goals – that means I can get a goal setting fix while completely ignoring my own.

And what a week it was, indeed!

Sir, I am going to miss your daily writing, terribly. (I think the comma is in the right spot there.) It has been lovely learning about the various beasts of the Lowveld and beyond, especially since this particular dog remembers protesting your large country fairly frequently in the 1980s (nothing personal, of course–it was a thing) as well as meeting quite enough Boers while traveling, thank you very much. How delightful it has been then to virtually travel SA with you all, helpfully and mercifully equipped with quirk and good humor. And of course, pants.

I have learned the value of declaring victory and moving on … I first learned it while trying to sand drywall.

… still laughing about how the Hindenberg observer has only one leg left unscathed, and he’s using that to get out of town. My kids keep saying, ‘But that’s not funny, mom!’
    I beg to differ.

  7. Gosh, how did I come across your blog and not notice you were South African? …I didn’t get why you linked to that news site though, there wasn’t anything particularly horrifying in those news (particularly with that picture of dried mackerels) …not compared to what we get in Britain all the time (and I bet the USA are worse by far…not that I’d like to be judgemental here, but stuff from there swaps over to British news all the time and they are, after all, the bigger country).

I seem to have missed a number of your posts this week, and will have to go back and review. The problem with the world being round and all is that so many interesting people write while I’m sleeping, and when I wake up there are so many new posts to catch up on that I can’t. But I can’t believe I missed out on Frankenstein’s hamburger and sexually complicated fish.
