About

I have never been particularly good at this sort of thing- there is nothing worse for me than sitting in a room full of strangers and hearing the guy standing up at the front say “when it comes to your turn, please stand up, tell us your name, and tell us a little about yourself” so I will try to keep this brief. Here we go:

I was a bookseller, at a time when the whole industry was changing.

I am married to someone smarter and better looking than me. She’s also in the book trade.

I have two children, an 8 year old boy and a 3 year old girl. I think they are better looking than me. They think they are smarter.

I was trying to write a book, and using this blog to keep myself going. Instead, I discovered that blogging was much more fun than writing a book, so now I’m a blogger.

If there’s anything I’ve left out, feel free to ask. I will try not to be too evasive in my responses.

LOVE this About! Truly, blogging is easier than writing books 🙂 I’m very curious about the title , “23 Thorns”–do you explain this somewhere else on the blog??

    • 23thorns says:

I can’t really remeber- I wrote the about a long time ago. The 23 comes from the number of our place down in the bush, and I had set out to write a book about thorns. I didn’t. I wrote this blog instead.

  2. Kami says:

I was so hoping to find you’d taken up writing more. Is there a book out there instead? Hoping all is well.

Finally following your blog, cousin. You are amazing. 🙂

Did you live in the Somerset West area – anytime in your lifetime?

  5. my whole family is better looking than me too, even the dog is cuter in his own way. They are smart enough to realize this, but also smart enough to realize how loyal this makes me… Well, the dog understands me… I suppose.

  6. Oh, what a fabulous find! Thanks for liking a post on my blog, which lead me to yours. I look forward to your next post with glee.

  7. Hi there 23,

I’ve just read your blog and I wanted to say that I love your writing style. You had me enthralled immediately and laughing all along the way.

Thank you. I needed that today.

    I look forward to more.

http://spygarden.com/2015/05/03/10650/ Thought you would enjoy these crazy snake photos!

  10. I love your blog – no other blog makes me laugh so much. And as an ex-South African it reminds me of home, although your recent post on men’s clothes could have been written by my Italian husband, so you have an international appeal too! But I’m also commenting for a practical reason – I thought I’d seen a link somewhere to your bookshop? I want to order a book for a friend in Cape Town, and wondered if I could do it through your shop?

I can so relate to your about page. I am not great at standing up in public and telling people about myself. I prefer to write things down! 🙂

  12. Marcia says:

Hi, 23! Been a long time, but I haven’t forgotten ya! (Aren’t you glad? 🙂 ) Just wanted to tell you that I nominated you for One Lovely Blog Award. No need to participate if it’s not your thing, but I’m supposed to let you know. If you are interested, you can check out my post here: http://marciameara.wordpress.com/2014/07/20/one-lovely-blog-award/

You are in the company of 14 other cool bloggers, some of whom you might find interesting. In the meantime, keep on keepin’ on! You still ROCK!

    • 23thorns says:

Hi Marcia. As you might have noticed, I have been a little busy myself of late and only popping in from time to time. Thank you for the nomination, but that is small potatoes next to getting a book published. Congratulations! you did what the rest of us only talk about doing…

  13. Talking about oneself is always a bit awkward. Thanks for sharing and adding humor and insight to the world.

  14. Alice says:

“Wildlife in a Can” is an excellent article. Thanks.

You ought to have no trouble getting that published!

Please may I reblog to http://www.endtrophyhuntingnow.com?

  15. I’ve been really negligent of all the blogs,(including mine…busy with family junk), but I had to drop in and wish you and yours a wonderful 2014.

  16. PaulSmuts says:

I recently read your article on the ANC T-shirt scandal over at News24. It caught my eye because I was a Westville boy while living in Durban. I clicked the link to your blog and here I am. I look forward to following your posts!

  17. Vicki (from Victoria A Photography) says:

Thanks for dropping by my Blog. Thought I would see what your own blog is about, but sad to say your posts are far too long to read (for me).
May I suggest you cut them down to just a few paragraphs for each post and then, I’m sure you will gain more followers.

Most people are ‘time short’ these days and follow many blogs. I’d love to see some more wildlife photos on yours.

    • 23thorns says:

Hi. Thanks for stopping by. I blog these days mostly to practice writing, so I’m not too fired up about gaining more followers.
I should, I suppose, try and put out the odd shorter post, but weirdly enough I find that they tend to take too long to write.

  18. petrel41 says:

    Congratulations, 23thorns!

I have nominated your blog for the Awesome Blog Content Award.

Hi! Formal things first. Thanks for liking my post at VagabondImages and giving me an opportunity to land at your blog. Was just trying to figure out your name, but failed. This is something I miss in many of ‘about me’. Your blog is interesting and probably resonates many of us, who have landed up in blogging in search of better vents. Keep coming to my site, hope it interests you.

Thanks so much for liking my post on the Sunshine Scrapbook! 🙂

  24. The professor hates telling stuff about himself. (We know you are smarter, though.)

  25. This is an incredible story!
I nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award!

  27. susanhayden says:

Your ‘About’ is funny! I totally relate to the horror of having to talk about yourself. I regularly read my own ‘About’ and cringe but try to remember that other people are usually nicer to us than we are to ourselves. Also relate to blogging instead of writing the book. All this affirmation is irresistible! Thanks for liking my recipe, and good luck! 🙂

  28. Rob Viens says:

Thanks for visiting and liking the Beagle Project! I agree – blogging is addicting once you get in the grove…

  29. I’m not good at this either. I love your blog and have nominated you for an award. Hope you like it. Here is the link to it which will be posted shortly.

    Unexpected Surprises

    Ciao, Susan

  30. Thank you so much for reading about our priests in India. There were 12 men ordained just the other day. I will be posting a short report about that sometime today. I enjoyed reading your blog. I think so many people need a little more humor these days.

  31. dangerzonerez says:

Love your intro! So simple and clever! I too hate those “tell us about yourself” things. As if any human being can be so simply summed up in one or a few sentences! Thanks for the follow! I’m returning the favor and looking forward to more posts! Cheers!

  32. Greg Seymour says:

Your Blog rocks and I am sharing it. My wife and I just moved to Costa Rica in June and as must happen when you move to a foreign country you start a blog. I have created a “Resource/Blogs I read” page and linked 23thorns to the page – its at http://costaricacurious.com/resources-and-blogs/.

Thanks and keep up the great work,
    Greg

OK… Mr blogger moved on from writer… I’m also not pretty… they all look better than me.
I get a feeling there may be a bit of Africa lurking somewhere… I also get a feeling that if that’s the case you may want to edit/ review/rewrite a novel that needs an African eye and understanding… 😉

  41. chowanyau says:

Thanks for liking my blog , ‘the neighbours’, coming from an ex-bookseller that’s quite a compliment. I shall start following your blog and let you know what I think.

  42. I am so happy you found our blog, because this might be the best bio I have ever read. Looking forward to getting to know you!
